MCDERMOTT

Coach McDermott is the President and Owner of The McDermott Athletic Center and the Hooligans/ MAC Elite Baseball Program.

 

Prior to opening the MAC and starting the Hooligans, Coach McDermott played baseball for Rio Rancho High School and then moved on to play collegiately. A series of injuries and surgeries put an end to Coach McDermott’s playing days, but his passion for baseball persisted.

 

After working for the New York Yankees Coach McDermott decided to start giving lessons to local players. A short time, and many players, later the Hooligans were formed and has grown into the most successful baseball program in the state.

 

Coach McDermott works with players of all ages and ability levels on pitching, hitting and fielding. Current clients include youth, high school and college players.

STEVE

SHIRLEY

Steve Shirley was a professional and major league pitcher for 15 years spending time with the Dodgers, Royals, Tigers, Pirates and Expos. After his playing days were over he became a professional coach and manager. During his time coaching and managing professionally he earned 2 manager of the year awards in addition to helping many players advance their professional careers. Coach Shirley has also been been giving private lessons for years and has worked with the top players from New Mexico. 

 

Coach Shirley has officially joined the MAC staff and the Hooligans and MAC Elite as a coach and our head of field operations. He will be working closely with many players and coaches to ensure the programs continue to meet and exceed the standards that has given the programs so much success. He will also be providing individual and group hitting and pitching lessons.  

KATIE

MCDERMOTT

Katie McDermott formed the Lady Hooligans in 2017. She has over 8 years of coaching experience across 3 different sports, with the last five years being softball within Rio Rancho Public Schools, with her last season of softball undefeated. Katie is passionate about helping student athletes get to the next level. She is passionate about the Lady Hooligans and dedicated to building a strong foundation and program. 

 

Katie is a native New Mexican who played for the New Mexico Sundancers and 4 years of varsity softball before graduating from Rio Rancho High School. After High School, Katie earned a scholarship and played softball at Eastern New Mexico University where she graduated from with her bachelors degree. Katie played 3rd base and catcher during her high school and college career.

TINA

GARCIA

Tina Garcia has coached softball six years within Rio Rancho Public Schools. She led Rio Rancho Middle School to an undefeated season before joining the Lady Hooligans in 2017. Garcia began her coaching journey to mentor and assist young softball players in receiving opportunities to play at the college level. 

 

Garcia is from Riverside, CA where she graduated from Ramona High School. She was a four year varsity player and a member of the So Cal Dynasty travel ball team. She received a scholarship to play at Midland College in Texas where she graduated with an associates degree. She then received a scholarship and graduated from Eastern New Mexico University. Her primary position was as a catcher but was often used as a utility player and third baseman.
